Ectropion and Entropion Repair in Palm Desert, CA

What is an Ectropion & Entropion Repair?

Ectropion and Entropion Repairs are the surgical procedures that correct eyelid margins that turn unnaturally outward or inward.

Why is Ectropion and Entropion Repair Done?

Both conditions most commonly occur in the lower lid only and are often a result of aging changes or trauma that has caused scar tissue to pull the eyelid into an unnatural and often uncomfortable and unsightly position.

Ectropian and entropian repair is indicated when discomfort or ocular function becomes impaired. Infections of the skin, the eye itself along with dysfunctional tearing can all occur with ectropian or entropian conditions and repair is frequently done to treat or prevent these complications.

Ectropian

Ectropian occurs when the lower eyelid can become lax and rotates outward. Conditions such as aging, prior surgery or trauma can lead to weakening of the lower eyelid. Ectropion can cause chronic eye irritation and tearing because the eye is constantly exposed to air which it is not used to and was not made for. The eyelid often becomes red and the eye will become irritated and tear excessively.

Entropion

An entropion occurs when the eyelid rotates inward causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye which then leads to chronic irritation and discomfort.

How is the Repair Performed?

Surgery to correct ectropion and entropion generally involves opening the back of the eyelid and suturing the internal components of the lid back to their proper positions. Repair may involve reinsertion of the lower lid retractors of the eyelid, using an incision on the back side of the eyelid, combined with lid tightening using a canthoplasty. (add link to canthoplasty procedure).

Scar Tissue

If the ectropion or entropion is caused by scar tissue from injury or a previous eyelid surgery, a skin graft may be required to create more support for the lid.

What is Recovery Like?

Recovery from ectropian and entroprian repair can vary depending on multiple factors including age, health, genetics and previous surgery. After most eyelid surgeries, heavy physical activity and sports are not recommended for the first week after surgery, however, normal activity (walking, shopping) is permitted. There are usually no bandages and showering is permitted the day after surgery.

What to Expect?

It is common for patients to develop bruising and swelling the majority of the swelling goes away in two to three weeks, but some swelling can last for a longer period of time as every patient heals at different rates depending on age and skin type.  Dr. Marshak will personally see you frequently in the post-operative period to monitor your healing and ensure you are on course.
