What is a Brow Lift?

Brow lift surgery, also known as a forehead lift, is a procedure that aims to enhance one’s appearance by surgically raising the entire upper face, forehead and brows into a more attractive and functional position.

Why is a Brow Lift Done?

Fullness of the upper eyelids is frequently caused not by excess skin of the upper lids, but by brows which have fallen and push extra skin onto the upper lids. In this case, excising skin from the upper lids would be the wrong operation as it does not address the cause of the problem and may pull the brows lower. Furthermore, trying to raise the brows after skin has been excised from the upper lids may lead to problems with eyelid closure. In cases of low brows, it is far better to elevate the upper face, forehead and brows to their proper position and then assess whether there is extra skin on the upper eyelids.

A brow lift can provide a long-lasting solution to a constant tired or angry appearance. When the forehead sags down over the eyes, vision can also be impaired, wrinkles deepen and individuals often take on a constantly tired and angry appearance. This is when most people start to consider a brow lift.

What is Recovery from a Brow Lift Like?

Recovery varies among patients depending on multiple factors including age, health, genetics and previous surgery. After most facial surgeries, heavy physical activity and sports are not recommended for the first week after surgery, however, normal activity (walking, shopping) is permitted.

After the Procedure

After the procedure, the forehead may be taped and/or loosely wrapped to minimize swelling and bruising.  A thin tube may be left to drain excess blood or fluid that may collect under the skin. Bandages or drains placed after the surgery will be removed during follow up appointments.  Post-procedure instructions usually include plenty of rest, fluids and keeping the head elevated which often means sleeping in a recliner or significantly propped up in bed.

What to Expect

  • Bruising
  • Swelling

It is common for patients to develop bruising and swelling. The majority of the swelling goes away in a few weeks, but some swelling can last for a longer period of time as every patient heals at different rates depending on age and skin type.  Dr. Marshak will personally see you frequently in the post-operative period to monitor your healing and ensure you are on course.
