Frequently Asked Questions

An Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon is an eyelid specialist who has extensive training in the surgical treatment of the tissues that surround to eye. This includes the eyelids, both eyelid skin and eyelid muscles, the bones around the eye and the eye socket, as well as the tear ducts and lacrimal system. The surgeon must be board certified in Ophthalmology and then complete a two year training program in Oculoplastic surgery. The surgeon must then pass a written and oral examination and submit a thesis paper. Only then is the surgeon admitted into the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASOPRS). The eyelid specialist is often referred to as Oculoplastic Surgeon or Oculo-facial plastic surgeon.

Dr. Marshak sees all patients personally from the initial consultation, surgery, suture removal and all post-operative care. Dr. Marshak continues to see patients post-operatively until all swelling has resolved and until both he and the patient are pleased with the results.

A Cosmetic Surgeon must complete a fellowship sponsored by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, submit 100 before and after pictures of surgeries for review, pass a written and oral examination by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and write a thesis. Dr. Marshak completed a two year fellowship in cosmetic facial surgery and is a diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.

Surgeries are performed either in the office procedure room under local anesthesia or at an outpatient surgery center under IV sedation. Options will be discussed during your consultation and tailored for your specific needs.

Patients vary in how they heal based on multiple factors including age, health, genetics and previous surgery. After eyelid surgery, most patients have bruising for one to two weeks. Heavy physical activity and sports are not recommended for the first week after surgery, however normal activity (walking, shopping) is permitted. There are usually no bandages and showering is permitted the day after surgery. There may be swelling for the first two weeks, which gradually dissipates over time. Dr. Marshak will personally see you frequently in the post-operative period to monitor your healing and ensure you are on course.

Most patients undergoing eyelid surgery report minimal discomfort. Patients undergoing face-lifts may have discomfort for two or three days. Any discomfort is generally easily tolerated with prescribed pain medication.

Surgeries which are considered medically necessary MAY be covered by your health insurance. Dr. Marshak will evaluate your concerns and submit documentation for pre-authorization if indicated. Dr. Marshak is a Medicare provider and is a participating provider for most PPO types of insurance.
